Custom Lolligag "Hot People" Collectible

$850.00

One of a kind custom Lolligag Collectible made exclusively for BF/C Hot People. The figure was painted with acrylics, and the flame pieces were constructed with resin. It’s important to note that the figure itself is made of a resin/vinyl mixture and not strictly vinyl, so it feels heavier, more solid and more “collectible” than just vinyl.

Interview with the maker

How did you come to be fans of BF/C? I found them on Spotify after they released their very first album (BF/C). While my gateway drug was the pulsating “Upstate,” I literally found the entire album entrancing. Not a bad song in the bunch. I especially loved how Barish sounded as if he had just stepped out of a 1970s rock band, but that the music was mainly electronic, very melodic and uber modern. The lyrical content was fantastic too. It was refreshing and took me places in my head.  When a band can transport me places, I’m all in. I’ve been a fan ever since, and have evangelized their music to Nanako who is also a big fan now. We just wish we could see them live.

Can you tell me a bit more about your process? Our process usually involves us fighting. Ha. I’m just kidding. Sort of. It’s definitely a process, that’s for sure. It goes like this: I’ll get an idea or theme for the character based on something I may have seen or heard, and I’ll pitch it to Nanako so that she can whip something up as only she can do. Occasionally, I’ll send her some art inspiration to help her understand where I’m coming from. Then, she'll take a stab and I’ll look at it and tell her it’s all wrong. And she’ll yell at me and together we will refine the artwork, the colors and the copy until it’s... “magic.” It’s actually fun to go through it all, and the great thing is that we both need each other to make it work. Lolligag is our “baby.”

How did you decide how you wanted to customize the figure? It was easy: We read the lyrics and listened to the song. There was so much in there to choose from. The custom toy is based on the sculpt of our Aloha! Lolligag toy. We had a hard time deciding if we should've used our first toy, Vive La Lolligag for the custom, but felt the grass skirt and overall pose of Lolligag as a hula girl would work best for capitalizing on the idea of flames and, well, “Hot People." We reached out to one of our custom toy collaborators, MJ Hsu, and asked her if she wouldn’t mind working with us on the piece. She did such an amazing job. We couldn’t be more happy with the final result.

Would you be willing to share a photo of a blank? The toy is based on an unpainted version of this: https://lolligagworld.com/product/aloha-lolligag-twilight-edition-vinyl-toy/  If I can find a photo of a blank one, I’ll send it your way. But I may not be able to find one in time for the song release, only because we don’t have a lot of blanks. We were actually very lucky to have had one blank left (from the various art shows we did in the past) for the custom we produced for you, which now is painted. :)

Where do you draw inspiration from? The character of Lolligag was originally inspired by an amalgamation of Japanese character artwork, Harajuku fashions like Gothic Lolita-style, and cutesy vintage art found in children’s books (think Mary Blair and Golden Books). The thematic artwork we create with the character is based on what we see around us, past and present, and current trends. It’s really fun and exciting to reimagine our character in so many different ways. While we do have rules for Lolligag that we adhere to, as long as our final output is cute, positive and inspiring, it’s usually ready for primetime.
